Ohio Wesleyan 14, St. Vincent 8

Sophomore attacker Dave Castignola (Dublin/Scioto) scored 3 goals during the first quarter as Ohio Wesleyan raced to a 7-1 lead and went on to defeat St. Vincent in non-conference action on Thursday at Selby Field.

Freshman midfielder Craig Aronoff (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School) gave the Bishops the lead just 48 seconds into the game, and junior midfielder Chris Eccles (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) followed with a goal at the 12:00 mark to make it a 2-0 game.

Castignola followed with a pair of scores, the first from sophomore attacker Eric Turner (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) and the second an unassisted man-up goal, as the Bishops extended the lead to 4-0.

The Bearcats got on the scoreboard on Evan Chateauneuf's unassisted goal midway through the first quarter, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with goals by Castignola, junior midfielder Steve Fowler (Wilton, Conn.) and junior midfielder Harrison Iuliano (Mendham, N.J./Blair Academy) for a 7-1 advantage.

St. Vincent rallied to within 8-5 as Bart Costello scored twice during a 3-0 second-quarter run.

Ohio Wesleyan closed out the first half with 4 goals in the final 2:30 of the quarter, with Castignola scoring twice during that stretch, to lead 12-5 at halftime.

The Bishops added scores by sophomore midfielder Connor McGowan (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) and freshman attacker Chris Ehlinger (Radnor, Pa.) while holding St. Vincent scoreless during the third quarter, and the Bearcats returned the favor in the fourth quarter, holding Ohio Wesleyan off the scoreboard while drawing within 14-8 on a pair of goals by Chateauneuf and another by Costello.

Castignola led the Bishops with 5 goals and an assist. Ehlinger finished with 3 goals and McGowan added 2 goals.

Junior Ryan Perone (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) recorded 12 saves during the first 3 quarters, and freshman Gavin Bennett (Lebanon, N.J./The Millbrook (N.Y.) School) had 3 saves during the fourth quarter.

Costello led the Bearcats with 4 goals, while Costello finished with 3 goals.

Jon McMahon started in the St. Vincent goal and had 3 saves, and Alden Ainsworth came on late in the first quarter and posted 19 saves.
