Ohio Wesleyan 2, Wisconsin-Oshkosh 0
Allegheny 2, Olivet 1

Sept. 1, 2006

[ Craig Neal ]Senior midfielder Craig Neal (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) scored both Ohio Wesleyan goals and the Bishop defense turned in a fine effort to help the Ohio Wesleyan men's soccer team to a season-opening win over Wisconsin-Oshkosh in first-round action of the annual Fred Myers Invitational on Friday at Roy Rike Field.

Ohio Wesleyan will face Olivet at 7:30 p.m. in the tournament's second round. Saturday's first game matches Allegheny against Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

The Titans had the first good scoring chance of the game when Will Howell sent a header toward the goal mouth, but junior Jamison Dague (Bexley) corralled the ball near the left post.

Neal gave the Bishops a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when senior midfielder Brandon Bianco (Powell/Olentangy) served the ball into the box from the right side and Neal headed it home past Titan keeper Derek Christiansen.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh had a look at the tying goal on David Frey's shot from just outside the box in the 38th minute, but again Dague was there for the save.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead when Neal took a pass near the top of the box, got a step on a Titan defender and slipped a shot inside the right post with 6:05 left in the first half.

The Bishops had a pair of good chances to increase their lead in the second half. Senior midfielder Tim Kelly (Westerville/North) saw his blast hit the crossbar, and Kelly was able to run down the offensive rebound, but his follow shot was wide.

Neal had a chance to complete a hat trick midway through the period, taking a centering pass directly in front of the Wisconsin-Oshkosh goal, but the Titan defense was able to break up the play.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 15-13. Dague stopped 7 shots in the Bishop goal, while Christiansen finished with 4 saves for the Titans.

In Friday's opener,
Allegheny's Ryan Kelly scored with 1:58 left in regulation time to break a 1-1 tie and give the Gators a win.

Olivet had taken a 1-0 lead when Kevin Hagan knocked home a loose ball in the Allegheny box in the seventh minute.

The Gators tied the game just over 5 minutes later when Mark Dobish launched a throw-in to Chris Fedele, who converted the chance.

Kelly's game-winner came on a rocket from about 30 yards out on the right wing.

Ryan Larkin was credited with 2 saves for Allegheny, while Michael Manning had 5 saves in the Comet goal.
