Ohio
Wesleyan 1, Chicago 0
Ohio Dominican 2, Elmhurst 1
Sept. 8, 2006
Senior
midfielder Craig Neal (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) headed home the game-winning
goal with 9:31 left in regulation time to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Chicago
in first-round action of the annual adidas® Invitational on Friday
at Roy Rike Field.
Ohio
Wesleyan will face Elmhurst at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in the tournament's
second round. Saturday's first game matches Chicago against Ohio Dominican.
The win was the 30th straight in regular-season action for Ohio Wesleyan,
breaking the school-record 29-game streak assembled by the 1991 and 1992
Battling Bishops.
The Maroons had the better of play during the first 15 minutes of the
match, but could not translate that into a goal. Chicago's best chances
came when Eric Floyd's shot from the left side went blistering across
the goal mouth and wide, and when Joe Frontczak's header was saved by
Bishop keeper Jamison Dague (Bexley).
Ohio Wesleyan's best chance of the first half came with about 12 minutes
to play, when senior back Josh Warren (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) had
his header saved by Maroon keeper Keith Crum.
Both teams came out firing early in the second half, the Maroons getting
the first chance when Alex Takakuwa had his shot from the right side saved
by Dague in the first minute of play, and the Bishops answering just over
a minute later when a through ball from senior midfielder Tim Kelly (Westerville/North)
set up senior forward Kevin Lehman (Easton, Conn./Barlow) for a run at
the goal, but Lehman's shot was high.
Takakuwa and Lehman again traded scoring chances just over a minute apart
shortly thereafter, with Takakuwa's shot off a restart hitting the left
post and going over the end line, and Lehman's shot off a crossing pass
from freshman midfielder Phil Serfaty (Dublin/Jerome) sailing high.
Ohio Wesleyan took the lead after a Chicago foul gave the Bishops a restart.
Junior back Ben Brewer (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) sent the ball into the
box and Neal came in from the left side to head it past Crum and into
the back of the net with 9:31 left in regulation time.
Chicago's best chance at tying the score came less than a minute later,
when Floyd's header off a restart went wide of the post.
Chicago
outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 15-8. Dague finished with 2 saves in the Bishop
goal, while Crum finished with 2 saves for the Maroons.
In Friday's opener, Ohio
Dominican's Shan Wade scored with 5:10 left in the first overtime period
to break a 1-1 tie and give the Panthers a win.
Elmhurst had taken a 1-0 lead when Tommy Hunka's shot ricocheted off an
Ohio Dominican defender and into the goal with 3:07 left in the first
half.
The Panthers tied the game early in the second half when Peter Fink put
a shot into the right corner from the middle of the box.
Wade's game-winner came on a diving header off a crossing pass from Jay
Mitchell.
Chris Eaken was credited with 2 saves for Ohio Dominican, while Britt
Blackwell had 5 saves in the Blue Jay goal.
