Ohio Wesleyan 64, Case Reserve 63

Junior wing Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) hit a free throw with no time on the clock to lift Ohio Wesleyan to a non-conference win over Case Reserve on Tuesday night at Branch Rickey Arena.

Junior wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) had tied the score at 63-63 with a 3-pointer with 1:18 to play, and the Bishops followed with a stop on the Spartan end of the court, with Macklin clearing the defensive rebound with :47 remaining.

The CWRU defense did not allow the Bishops an open look, however, and Graf's hurried shot from the right baseline as the shot clock was running out was grabbed by Spartan forward Ashley Horton with :15 to play.

After a timeout, Case Reserve got the ball to midcourt against the Bishop press and called another timeout with :03 remaining.

Macklin swept in and stole the ensuing inbounds pass, and took off for the basket. She was fouled by CWRU's Dana Dempsey just before the final buzzer sounded and was awarded 2 free throws. With the lanes empty, Macklin hit the first charity toss to end the game.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken an early 9-2 lead, getting a pair of free throws from Graf and Macklin and a 3-pointer from senior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) along the way.

Case Reserve came back to tie the game at 11-11 on a 3-pointer by Mary Herendeen and baskets by LaVonne Sherald, Dempsey and Ashleigh Tondo. The Spartans would build a 29-23 lead on a lay-in by Horton with 2:56 left in the first half and took a 33-30 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

The Spartans still led, 40-36, after a 3-pointer and a basket by Dempsey, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with a 12-3 run that included a pair of 3-pointers by Graf and 2 lay-ins by senior wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley). Junior post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) capped the run with a lay-in that gave the Bishops a 48-43 lead with 12:22 remaining.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 59-57 lead on a pair of Lloyd free throws with 3:13 to go, but the Spartans tied the game on a pair of Dempsey free throws just :08 later and built a 63-60 lead on a Maria Jackson lay-in and Horton's 2 free throws with 1:58 to play.

Lloyd missed a 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, but stole the ball back and sent it ahead to Macklin, who passed it on to Graf in the left corner for the 3-pointer that tied the game at 63-63, setting up the final 78 seconds of regulation.

Graf led the Bishops with 18 points. Lester grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds and Lloyd, Macklin and Lester shared the team lead with 3 assists apiece.

Horton led the Spartans with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Dempsey added 13 points and Herendeen finished with 10 points. Sherald led CWRU with 5 assists.
