Ohio Wesleyan 86, Oberlin 55

Senior wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) scored 7 points as Ohio Wesleyan ended the first half with a 14-2 run to break open a close game and went on to defeat Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Friday night at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Yeowomen started the game like a house afire, hitting their first 5 shots.

But thanks to 3-pointers by Messaros and senior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) and a lay-in by sophomore post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless), the Bishops stayed close, and tied the game at 10-10 on a lay-in by junior post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) with 14:20 left in the first half.

The Bishops would not trail again, although Oberlin did tie the game at 13-13 on a 3-pointer by Jessie Oram with 12:13 left in the period.

Ohio Wesleyan broke the tie with Lloyd's lay-in, and the Bishops opened up a 28-19 lead on Lawson's fast break lay-in with 5:43 to play.

Oberlin closed to within 28-23 on baskets by January Baker and Oram, the latter with 3:30 remaining, but Oram's hoop would be the last of the half for the Yeowomen.

The Bishops answered with a lay-in by Lawson, a jumper and a pair of free throws from Messaros, 3-pointers from Messaros and sophomore guard Stacey Aaron (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) and finished off the 14-2 spurt with a Lester lay-in that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 42-25 halftime lead.

Oberlin whittled the margin to 49-35 on Oram's jumper from the lane with 15:21 left in regulation time, but that was as close as the Yeowomen would come.

Messaros led the Bishops with 21 points. Lloyd finished with 19 points and dished out a team-high 7 assists, Lawson contributed 14 points and Lester finished with 10 points. Sophomore post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) led the Bishops with 6 rebounds.

Oram led the Yeowomen with 19 points. Alyssa Clark added 10 points and posted team bests of 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
