Denison 67, Ohio Wesleyan 61

Senior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) scored 5 points and sophomore post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) added 2 as Ohio Wesleyan sliced a 10-point deficit to 3, but Denison held off the Bishop rally and escaped with a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Saturday night at Branch Rickey Arena.

Denison had taken a 60-50 lead when Mimi Pierson hit the second of 2 free throws with 5:19 left in regulation time.

The Bishops got a pair of Hamilton free throws, then Lloyd hit a pair of free throws. When Hamilton found Lloyd for an open 3-pointer with 2:19 to play, Ohio Wesleyan had pulled within 60-57.

After the teams traded points, Denison added to its lead with a Tammy Hoch jumper and a pair of free throws by Kristen Sheffield that gave the Big Red a 66-59 lead with :50 remaining.

Hamilton hit a lay-in to bring the Bishops within 66-61 with :30 left, but Sheffield hit the second of 2 free throws to stretch the lead to 6 points with :16 on the clock, and Ohio Wesleyan was not able to get off another shot.

Denison reeled off a 14-4 run during the first half, breaking a 12-12 tie with 3-pointers by Sarah Perrine and Sheffield and extending its advantage with 3-pointers from Perrine and Amber Hill, the latter giving the Big Red a 26-16 lead with 7:09 left in the first half.

The Big Red led by as many as 12 points during the second half, but Ohio Wesleyan got back in the game with a 7-0 run that included a lay-in, a 3-point play and 2 more free throws by senior wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley).

Messaros' last free throw brought the Bishops within 54-49 with 7:01 remaining, but the Big Red answered with a 3-pointer by Lauren Vashaw and a pair of free throws from Perrine to stretch the lead back to 10 points, setting the stage for the final 6 minutes.

Lloyd led the Bishops with 17 points, going 5-for-6 from the field, 3-for-3 from 3-point range and 4-for-4 from the line, and led the Bishops with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Hamilton contributed 11 points.

Perrine led the Big Red with 16 points, while Sheffield had 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Hill and Caitlin Krupka shared the Denison lead with 3 assists apiece.
