Kenyon 62, Ohio Wesleyan 57

Jan. 10, 2007

Senior wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) buried a 3-pointer with :17 remaining in regulation time to pull Ohio Wesleyan within 58-57, but Kenyon hit 4 straight free throws to hold off the Bishops and take a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday night in Gambier.

Kenyon threatened to run away with the game early, opening the scoring with a 3-pointer by Anne Dugan, and after Ohio Wesleyan answered with a bucket by junior wing Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley), going on a 13-2 streak that included 3-pointers by Dugan, Alisha Moreno and Megan Smith, the last giving the Ladies a 16-4 lead less than 6 minutes into the game.

Ohio Wesleyan fought back, getting lay-ins from Messaros and senior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson), a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Stacey Aaron (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) and a lay-in by junior wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) to pull within 18-15 with 8 minutes left in the half.

Messaros brought the Bishops within 23-22 late in the period, and after the teams traded points for a 25-24 margin at halftime, Ohio Wesleyan took the lead when Lloyd opened the second half with a steal and lay-in.

The Ladies re-took the lead on a 3-point play by Eva George, and eventually built the margin to 43-35 on Brittany Clair's jumper with 12:49 left in regulation time.

Graf and Macklin then hit 3-pointers to highlight a 10-0 Ohio Wesleyan run, leaving the Bishops with a 45-43 lead with 9:54 to play.

Kenyon re-took the lead once more, but the Bishops stayed in the game at the free throw line, with Lloyd hitting a pair and Graf doing likewise to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 54-52 with 1:24 left in regulation time.

George was fouled on an offensive rebound and hit a pair of free throws with :54 left, but Graf countered with a lay-in 11 seconds later to make it 56-54. Kenyon followed with a pair of free throws from Moreno, setting up Messaros' 3-pointer that brought Ohio Wesleyan within 58-57.

George hit 2 free throws on Kenyon's next possession, and with a 60-57 lead, the Ladies fouled before the Bishops could get off a potential game-tying 3-point attempt. Lloyd missed both free throw tries with :07 to play and Laurel Stokes grabbed the rebound for Kenyon and was fouled. Stokes hit both shots to account for the 62-57 final.

Graf led the Bishops with 14 points, while Messaros finished with 13 points and Lloyd scored 10 points. Junior post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) led the Bishops with 10 rebounds and sophomore post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) and Lloyd shared the team lead with 3 assists apiece.

Hilary Gowins led the Ladies with 13 points and 5 assists. George added 12 points and Stokes led Kenyon with 7 rebounds
