Ohio Wesleyan 69, Earlham 48

Senior wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) drilled three 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with a 16-4 run and went on to defeat Earlham in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday in Richmond, Ind.

Junior wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) hit a 3-pointer and junior post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) added a pair of free throws to give the Bishops a 5-0 lead, and after Shantavia Davis and Casie Byrd scored to bring the Quakers within 5-4, Messaros hit 3-pointers on 3 of Ohio Wesleyan's next 4 possessions. A lay-in by senior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) gave the Bishops a 16-4 lead with 15:35 left in the first half.

Earlham held the Bishops scoreless for the next 5 minutes, closing to within 16-8 on Starr Gary's lay-in with 10:51 to play in the half, but Lloyd hit a 3-pointer to end the Bishop drought and restore the double-digit lead.

The Quakers came back once more, with Davis and Gary each contributing a basket and a pair of free throws. Gary's steal and lay-in brought Earlham within 25-19 with 5:30 left in the first half.

Messaros hit another 3-pointer to end that Quaker run, and Lloyd hit a 3-pointer and Lester contributed a bucket and a pair of free throws as the Bishops responded with an 11-2 burst to take a 36-21 lead in the closing seconds of the half.

Tasha Merrill closed out the first half with a lay-in for the Quakers, and Jayana Sims hit a lay-in to open the second half and bring Earlham within 36-25, but Lloyd hit consecutive 3-pointers for a 42-25 Ohio Wesleyan lead, and the Quakers would not threaten again.

Lloyd led the Bishops with 21 points, while Messaros added 17 points and Lester finished with 10. Sophomore post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless) grabbed a team-leading 9 boards and junior wing Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) led the Bishops with 4 assists.

Davis scored 17 points to lead Earlham. Gary had 13 points and led the Quakers with 10 rebounds, and Byrd led Earlham with 3 assists.
