Ohio
Wesleyan 66, Allegheny 39
Jan.
27, 2007
Senior
guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) scored 8 points as Ohio Wesleyan
closed the first half with a 12-3 run and pulled away during the second
half to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Allegheny on Saturday
at Branch Rickey Arena.
The 39 points surrendered by the Bishops marked the best defensive effort
in the 52-game series. Previously, the fewest points allowed by Ohio Wesleyan
in a game against Allegheny was in a 72-44 victory at Branch Rickey Arena
during the 1992-93 season.
Defensive intensity was the name of the game during the first half. After
senior wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) opened the game's
scoring with a 3-pointer exactly 2 minutes into the contest, the Gators
scored 5 straight points, breaking a 3-3 tie on Jennifer Latronica's lay-in
with 16:21 remaining in the first half.
Afer a Messaros free throw, the Bishops took the lead for good when sophomore
post Katie Hamilton scored on a putback at the 13:52 mark, then increased
the lead to 8-5 on another Hamilton putback on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession.
Allegheny came back within 12-11 on a pair of free throws by Latronica
with 6:08 left in the half when Lloyd started to heat up.
Lloyd and Messaros hit 3-pointers to give the Bishops an 18-11 lead with
3:22 to play, and after Katie Kestler's putback brought the Gators within
18-13, Lloyd scored on a steal and lay-in and followed with a 3-pointer
to give the Bishops a 24-14 halftime lead.
During the first half, Allegheny shot 17.9 percent from the field, making
5 of 28 field goal attempts.
The Gators came back to within 25-17 on another Kestler follow shot early
in the second half, but Ohio Wesleyan scored the next 14 points to put
the game out of reach, with junior post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins
Memorial) scoring 8 points and Hamilton contributing 4 points during that
run.
Messaros led the Bishops with 16 points, while Lloyd and Lester finished
with 10 points apiece. Sophomore post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless)
grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds and Lloyd led the Bishops with 3 assists.
For Allegheny, Latronica led the way with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Maggie
Mucha had 3 assists for the Gators.
