Ohio Wesleyan 74, Earlham 40

Sophomore post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) scored 5 points during a 12-0 first-half run that helped Ohio Wesleyan break open a North Coast Athletic Conference victory over Earlham on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

It was the second straight outing in which Ohio Wesleyan held its opponent to 40 or fewer points. During their last 4 games, the Bishops have allowed an average of 43.8 points per game, with wins over Wittenberg and Allegheny included in that stretch.

The Bishops raced to a 7-0 lead behind a 3-pointer from junior wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) and back-to-back buckets by junior post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial).

Earlham then held the Bishops scoreless for nearly 4 minutes, but the Ohio Wesleyan defense allowed the Quakers only 2 baskets during that span, with Tasha Merrill and Starr Gary scoring to bring Earlham within 7-4.

Hamilton ended the Bishop drought with a lay-in with 12:11 left in the half, and after a pair of free throws by senior wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley), Hamilton buried a 3-pointer to extend the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 14-4.

Sophomore guard Stacey Aaron (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) followed with a 3-pointer and junior wing Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) added a lay-in off a Hamilton assist as the Bishops took a 19-4 lead with 9:37 left in the half, and the lead would remain in double figures for the remainder of the contest.

Messaros led the Bishops with 13 points, while Graf finished with 11 and senior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) scored 10 points. Lester grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and Macklin led the Bishops with 4 assists.

For Earlham, Shontavia Davis led the way with 16, and Lisa Vanderkolk had a team-best 7 rebounds.
