Wooster 62, Ohio Wesleyan 57

Feb. 2, 2007

Junior wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) scored 13 of her team-high 17 points during the second half as Ohio Wesleyan sliced a 13-point deficit to a single marker, but Wooster put the game away at the free throw line as the Fighting Scots held on for a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Friday at Wooster, ending the Bishops' 6-game winning streak.

Junior wing Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) put the Bishops on the scoreboard with a jumper on the game's opening possession, but Wooster answered with a 12-4 run, with Carly Loehrke hitting a pair of lay-ins and Maria Gonzalez converting a 3-point play during that stretch.

Ohio Wesleyan answered with a 3-pointer from senior wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) and a pair of free throws by sophomore post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) to close within 12-11, but the Scots reeled off the next 8 points, with Loehrke hitting 3 of those baskets, to take a 20-11 lead. Wooster would extend its lead to 32-19 on a 3-pointer by Beth Besancon Sidle with 4:47 left in the half, and the Scots still led, 33-21, with 2:16 remaining in the period.

The Bishops remained within striking distance through most of the second half, finally closing to within 55-54 on a jumper and a pair of free throws by Messaros, the latter with 2:56 remaining in regulation time.

Wooster's Winnie Adrien and Ohio Wesleyan senior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) traded buckets, leaving the Bishops trailing, 57-56, with 2:31 left in regulation time.

After Kym Wenz hit a jumper to give the Fighting Scots a 59-56 lead, the Bishops pulled within 59-57 when Graf hit the second of 2 free throws with :35 remaining.

The Bishops then forced a Wooster miss and Messaros cleared the rebound, giving Ohio Wesleyan the ball with a chance to tie the game, but Adrien stole the ball from Messaros, and Besancon Sidle hit the first of 2 free throws to make it a 3-point game.

Messaros got a look at a 3-pointer that would have tied the game, but her shot was off the mark and Kaitlin Krister cleared the rebound, was fouled, and hit both free throws to account for the final margin.

Graf led the Bishops with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Messaros finished with 16 points and Macklin shared the team lead with 6 rebounds.

Wooster was led by Loehrke's 24 points on 12-of-15 shooting from the field, and Loehrke also led all players with 9 boards. Besancon Sidle added 15 points and shared the Scot lead with 5 assists, and Adrien also shared the team lead with 5 assists
