Kenyon 56, Ohio Wesleyan 49

Feb. 7, 2007

Senior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) scored 6 points and junior post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) added 4 more as Ohio Wesleyan went on a 16-0 run to wipe out a 14-point second-half deficit, but Kenyon rallied to escape with a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 25-23 lead on Lloyd's lay-in during the opening minute of the second half, but Kenyon answered with a 16-1 run that included a 3-pointer and a jumper by Alisha Moreno, a 3-point play and a lay-in by Anne Dugan and a pair of lay-ins by Laurel Stokes.

Kenyon increased its lead to 43-29 on Megan Smith's lay-in at the midway point of the second half.

The Bishops kicked off their 16-0 run with a 3-pointer by junior wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary), and after a Kenyon turnover, Lester pared the deficit into single digits with a lay-in. After another Kenyon turnover, senior wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) converted a 3-point play to bring the Bishops within 43-37 with 8:31 to go.

Lester scored on a putback a minute later, and after another Kenyon turnover, Lloyd hit a fast break lay-in to make it a 43-41 game with 6:34 to play.

When Kenyon's Anne Dugan missed a jumper with 6:12 to play, it marked the Ladies' first shot since Smith's bucket nearly 4 minutes earlier.

The Bishops weren't done yet, though, closing to within a point when Lloyd hit the first of 2 free throws, then taking a 45-43 lead on Lloyd's 3-pointer with 4:32 to play.

Eva George ended the Kenyon drought with a lay-in on the Ladies' next possession. George was fouled on the play and mis
sed the ensuing free throw, but Kenyon cleared the offensive rebound and Moreno followed with a 3-pointer that put the Ladies ahead to stay.

George added a free throw with 3:04 to play to make it a 49-45 margin, and after a Bishop turnover, Moreno converted a 3-point play for a 52-45 Kenyon lead with 2:21 to go.

The first half was an evenly-played chess match of defensive skills, with neither team leading by more than 4 points.

Ohio Wesleyan took the biggest lead of the half, when sophomore guard Stacey Aaron (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) buried a 3-pointer for a 14-10 Bishop lead, but Ohio Wesleyan would not score again for more than 5 minutes, with Kenyon taking a 15-14 lead during that span.

The Ladies would go ahead, 23-21, on Smith's 3-point play with 1:35 left, but Ohio Wesleyan would hold Kenyon scoreless for the remainder of the half and even the game at 23-23 with a pair of free throws from sophomore post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby).

Messaros led the Bishops with 12 points. Hamilton grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds and Lloyd and Graf shared the team lead with 3 assists apiece.

Moreno finished with 15 points and 4 assists to lead the Ladies, and George added 10 points and a team-high 7 rebounds
.
