Denison 66, Ohio Wesleyan 56

Feb. 17, 2007

Sophomore post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless) scored 7 points and senior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) hit a 3-pointer during a 12-4 run that gave the Bishops the lead, but Denison pulled away with an 11-0 run in a span of 2 minutes during the second half to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Saturday in Granville.

The loss, combined with Wooster's win over Wittenberg on Saturday, leaves the Bishops and Fighting Scots tied for fifth place in the NCAC standings. Ohio Wesleyan won a coin flip and will be the No. 5 seed in next week's NCAC tournament.

Denison took a 5-0 lead in the first minute of play on Saturday on Kristen Sheffield's 3-pointer on the game's opening possession and a fast-break lay-in by Marisa Hard after a Bishop turnover.

Senior wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) put the Bishops on the scoreboard with a lay-in at the 17:38 mark, and after Caitlin Krupka countered with a lay-in for a 7-2 Big Red lead with 17:14 to play, the defenses took over, with neither team scoring for nearly 5 minutes. Denison's Sarah Perrine broke the drought with a free throw with 12:24 to play, and Ellen O'Brien followed with a free throw to increase the Denison lead to 9-2 with 11:54 left in the half.

Lloyd kicked off the Bishop run with a 3-pointer, and after Denison's Mimi Pierson hit a jumper from the line, sophomore post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) sank a pair of free throws. Lawson followed with a pair of lay-ins sandwiched around a Denison basket by Carolyn Simpson, and Lawson capped the streak with a 3-pointer that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 14-13 lead with 8:14 remaining in the period.

Ohio Wesleyan trailed, 22-21, on Hamilton's basket with 3:04 left in the half, but the Big Red scored the final 5 points of the period on baskets by Simpson and Krupka and a Sheffield free throw for a 27-21 lead at the break.

The Bishops were still within 39-36 after a bucket by junior post Malley Adamsky (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) time when Denison went on its 11-0 run. Krupka opened the run with a 3-pointer with 10:16 left in regulation time, then Tammy Hoch sank a pair of free throws and converted a 3-point play before Amber Hill hit a 3-pointer for a 50-36 Denison lead with 8:16 to go, and the lead would remain in double figures for the remainder of the contest.

Lawson led the Bishops with 12 points. Junior post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds.

For Denison, Krupka led the way with 13 points and 5 assists. Simpson finished with 10 points. Sheffield and Hoch each snared 9 rebounds
