Kenyon 54, Ohio Wesleyan 44

Freshman guard Erica Gibson (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) scored 5 points and sophomore post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) added a bucket as Ohio Wesleyan overcame a slow start to pull within 10-9, but Kenyon went on a 14-5 run late in the first half and went on to defeat the Bishops in a North Coast Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday in Gambier.

The Bishops missed their first 16 shots from the field, but their stout defense kept them in the game. When Gibson hit the Bishops' first basket on a putback with 9:04 left in the first half, Ohio Wesleyan was within 8-3, and far from out of the game despite the chilly start.

That point was underscored on Kenyon's next possession, when Gibson followed with a steal and lay-in and was fouled on the play, and the ensuing free throw pulled the Bishops to within 8-6 with 8:45 to play in the period.

After Megan Smith scored for Kenyon, senior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) sank a free throw and Hamilton hit a jumper from the lane to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 10-9 with 4:17 left in the half.

The Ladies answered with a 3-point play and a bucket from Amy Thurber, then a 3-pointer from Hilary Gowins. Ohio Wesleyan countered with a pair of hoops by junior wing Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) to pull within 18-13, but Kenyon got a 3-pointer from Anne Dugan and a 3-point play from Gowins to make it 24-13 with :28 remaining in the half.

Ohio Wesleyan came within 24-16 at halftime on a free throw by Gibson and 2 more from Hamilton, and Lloyd hit some timely 3-pointers to keep the Bishops within striking distance during the second half, but Ohio Wesleyan would come no closer than 6 points during the remainder of the contest.

Lloyd led the Bishops with 14 points, while Gibson finished with a season-high 10 points. Junior post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds and Lloyd and junior wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) shared the team lead with 3 assists apiece.

Gowins led the Ladies with 13 points and Laurel Stokes contributed 10 points. Dugan had 9 rebounds and Alisha Moreno dished out 4 assists.
