Heidelberg 62, Ohio Wesleyan 47

Sophomore post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless) hit a basket and a pair of free throws as Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with an 8-4 run, but Heidelberg took the lead with a 16-2 spree and went on to a non-conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Monday night at Branch Rickey Arena.

Lawson's points gave the Bishops a 4-0 lead, and after the Student Princes tied the game at 4-4 on jumpers by Sarah Kesse and Brittany Skolnicki, Ohio Wesleyan took an 8-4 lead on baskets by junior post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) and senior wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley).

Maureen Hunter then buried a 3-pointer to bring Heidelberg within 8-7 and followed with a 3-point play to give the Student Princes a 10-8 lead with 12:45 left in the first half. Hollie Knott followed with a bucket and Jessica Jennette added a 3-pointer to stretch the Heidelberg lead to 15-8.

Messaros hit a lay-in to bring the Bishops within 15-10, but Campbell answered with a pair of jumpers and hit the first of 2 free throws to give Heidelberg a 20-10 lead with 6:23 left in the half.

Ohio Wesleyan rallied to within 20-17 on Lawson's 3-point play and baskets by Lester and Messaros, but the Student Princes responded with a 12-1 run that included 2 lay-ins and a 3-pointer by Campbell and was finished with a 3-pointer by Hunter that gave Heidelberg a 32-18 lead in the closing seconds of the half, and the lead would remain in double digits through the remainder of the contest.

Lawson led the Bishops with 11 points, while Messaros finished with 10 points and grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds. Junior wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) and junior wing Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) shared the team lead with 2 assists apiece.

Skolnicki led Heidelberg with 19 points, while Campbell added 16 points and shared the team lead with 6 rebounds. Hunter added 11 points and led Heidelberg with 5 assists. Knott also grabbed 6 boards for Heidelberg.
