Thomas
More 69, Ohio Wesleyan 60
Nov.
29, 2006
Sophomore post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless) scored 6 points
and senior
wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) added 5 more as Ohio
Wesleyan whittled a 26-point second-half deficit to 8, but Thomas More
recovered and was able to hold off the Bishop charge in taking a non-conference
win on Wednesday night
at Branch Rickey Arena.
After senior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) scored to bring
the Bishops within 9-7 with 16:12 left in the first half, the Saints went
on a 10-0 run that included a pair of buckets by Megan Wood, a 3-pointer
by Tangie Sellers and a free throw and a hoop from Kristen Humphrey.
Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 19-12 as junior wing Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley)
hit a jumper and Lawson knocked down a 3-pointer, but Thomas More went
on a 16-2 spree, with Alex Gee, Jennifer Teski and Amanda Link each hitting
a 3-pointer. Brooke Warner hit a pair of free throws to cap the run, which
gave the Saints a 35-14 lead with 6:06 left in the half.
Thomas More would lead, 46-24, at the intermission on Gee's 3-pointer
just before the buzzer, and stretched the margin to 50-24 on a jumper
by Warner and a pair of Wood free throws exactly 4 minutes into the second
half.
The Saints still led, 56-33, when Macklin converted a 3-point play with
11:59 left in regulation time.
The Bishop press started to pick up from there, holding the Saints to
one basket over the next 6 minutes.
Meanwhile, Ohio Wesleyan chipped away at the deficit, with sophomore guard
Stacey Aaron (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) drilling a 3-pointer, Lawson
hitting back-to-back jumpers in the lane, sophomore post Katie Hamilton
(Hilliard/Darby) draining a pair of free throws and Lawson and Macklin
contributing hoops to bring the Bishops within 59-49 with 5:58 to play.
Macklin's free throws made it 59-51 game with 5:43 remaining, but Thomas
More ended its drought with a pair of 3-pointers from Gee, and the Saints'
lead would remain in double figures until Messaros buried a 3-pointer
at the buzzer for the final margin.
Messaros led the Bishops with 17 points, while Lawson finished with 11
points and grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds. Lloyd, Macklin and Hamilton
shared the Bishop lead with 2 assists apiece.
Wood led Thomas More with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Gee added 15
points, all from behind the arc, and Humphrey scored 12 points. Jenna
Kelsch and Brooke Warner shared the Saint lead with 5 assists apiece.
