Ohio Wesleyan 71, Hiram 44

Sophomore post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) and junior wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) scored 3 points apiece during an 11-0 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay and the Bishops went on to defeat Hiram in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Terriers took a 9-8 lead on a lay-in by Cassie Bedard with 14:44 left in the first half.

Hamilton then hit a fast break lay-in to put the Bishops ahead to stay, and senior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) followed with a pair of free throws. After a charity toss by junior post Malley Adamsky (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and another by Hamilton, Graf buried a 3-pointer to cap the run and stretch the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 17-9 with 9:16 left in the first half.

Hiram was within 23-14 on Tania Carman's free throw with 6:24 in the period when the Bishops pulled away with a 13-4 run that included 3-pointers by Graf and sophomore guard Stacey Aaron (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) as well as buckets by Adamsky and junior post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial). Aaron's 3-pointer gave the Bishops a 36-18 lead with 2:48 left in the half, and the 18-point margin would hold up at the intermission, with Ohio Wesleyan taking a 40-22 lead into the locker room on a lay-in by sophomore post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless) in the waning seconds of the period.

Lloyd and Lawson opened the second half with lay-ins, and Hiram would not come closer than 19 points during the remainder of the contest.

Senior wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) led the Bishops with 16 points, while Graf and Lawson finished with 12 apiece and Lloyd added 11 more. Lawson grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds and Lloyd led the Bishops with 6 assists.

Bedard scored 10 points to lead the Terriers. Allison Davis and Karris Kandel shared the Hiram lead with 5 rebounds apiece and Brittany Mayle dished out a team-high 3 assists.
