Allegheny 67, Ohio Wesleyan 61

Junior wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) scored 9 straight points to help Ohio Wesleyan pare an 18-point deficit down to a single digit, but Allegheny withstood the rally and held on for a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Saturday at Meadville, Pa.

The Bishops raced to a 5-0 lead on a 3-pointer and a basket from senior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson), but Allegheny responded with a 12-0 spree that included a pair of buckets from Jennifer Latronica and a pair of 3-pointers by Katie Kestler.

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 12-9 on a steal and lay-in by junior post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial), but the Gators scored the next 7 points, with Brittany Bell contributing a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws, to stretch the lead to 19-9.

Ahead, 26-19, the Gators put together an 11-0 run, with Latronica again hitting a pair of buckets, and Allegheny led by a margin of 37-19 with 1:42 left in the first half.

Graf buried a 3-pointer with 1:22 left in the half to end the Bishop drought, and the resulting 37-22 margin was how the first half ended.

Junior wing Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) opened the second half with a 3-pointer, and Graf followed with 9 straight points to bring the Bishops within 37-34 with 16:32 left in regulation time.

Allegheny got a 3-pointer from Bell and a basket from Emilie Simone to end the dry spell, and the Gators still led, 50-44, after a pair of Becca Gasiewicz free throws with 10:58 to play.

Senior wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) then got hot, hitting a basket and a 3-pointer to pull Ohio Wesleyan to within 50-49 with 9:02 left, but Allegheny came back with 9 straight points, including a 3-pointer and a bucket from Gasiewicz, to take a 59-49 lead with 5:41 to go.

Ohio Wesleyan had one more run left, closing to within 63-59 on Lloyd's 3-pointer with 1:11 to go, but that was as close as the Bishops would come.

Graf led the Bishops with 21 points, while Lloyd and Messaros finished with 14 points apiece. Macklin grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and shared the team lead with 4 assists. Messaros also shared the team lead with 4 assists.

Latronica led Allegheny with 15 points, followed by Gasiewicz with 14, Kestler with 13 and Bell with 12. Kestler led the Gators with 8 rebounds and Stephanie Wolf had a team-high 5 assists.
