Ohio Wesleyan 60, Ohio Northern 51

Senior wing Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) scored 14 points and senior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) had 12 during the second half as Ohio Wesleyan withstood an Ohio Northern rally and pulled away in the closing minutes to take a non-conference win on Wednesday night at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Bishops led, 34-25, on a free throw by junior wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) with 13:24 left in regulation time before Ohio Northern tied the game with 3 straight 3-pointers by Jenny Markle, the last with 9:26 on the clock.

Ohio Wesleyan broke the 34-34 tie with a pair of free throws by sophomore post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) and added a lay-in by Messaros to take a 38-34 lead with 7:09 to play. The Polar Bears closed to within 38-36 before the Bishops went on a 6-1 run that included a lay-in by Messaros, a jumper by sophomore post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless) and a pair of Graf free throws for a 44-37 Ohio Wesleyan lead with 4:03 to play.

Markle helped rally the Polar Bears, hitting another 3-pointer shortly thereafter and sinking a fast break lay-in to bring Ohio Northern within 49-46 with 1:50 to play.

The Bishops then sealed the game at the line, with Lloyd sinking a pair of free throws at the 1:21 mark, Graf hitting 2 more at 1:09, Lloyd hitting a pair at :58 and Messaros draining 2 with :42 left to give Ohio Wesleyan a 58-48 lead.

All told, Ohio Wesleyan hit its last 9 free throws of the game and was 10-for-12 from the charity stripe during the final 2 minutes of the game.

The Bishops had taken an early 7-2 lead, breaking a 2-2 tie with a lay-in and a 3-pointer by Messaros.

Graf's 3-pointer gave Ohio Wesleyan a 19-9 lead with 8:10 left in the first half, and the Bishops led, 22-13, on Lloyd's 3-pointer with 5:09 left in the period before Ohio Northern scored the final 4 points of the half to cut the deficit to 22-17 at the intermission.

The Polar Bears closed to within 22-19 on Erin Brand's layup in the opening minutes of the second half, but Ohio Wesleyan responded with 6 straight points on a Messaros 3-pointer and a 3-point play by Lloyd to stretch the lead to 28-19, setting up the final 13 minutes.

Messaros and Lloyd finished with 19 points apiece, while Graf contributed 16 points for Ohio Wesleyan. Junior wing Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds and led the Bishops with 4 assists.

Markle led Ohio Northern with 17 points and Brand added 13 points. Brand and Megan Cevasco had 5 rebounds apiece, and Cevasco led the Polar Bears with 4 assists.
