Ohio Wesleyan 7, Albion 4

March 12, 2008

[ A.J. Dote ]Senior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) belted a solo homer to break a 3-3 tie and put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay in a non-conference win over Albion on Wednesday in Sarasota, Fla.

Dote's 2-out shot in the bottom of the fourth off Albion's Ryan Gunderson gave the Bishops a lead they would not relinquish. Ohio Wesleyan added an insurance run in the inning when junior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) followed with a single and scored on a double by senior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview).

The Bishops added 2 runs in the fifth on an RBI ground out by senior second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) and a double by senior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto).

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Dote lined a one-out single and Hronis was hit by a pitch before both runners scored on a throwing error by Albion third baseman Ryan Thurston. Sophomore third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves), sophomore designated hitter Jared Turner (Versailles) and sophomore catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) were each hit by a pitch to force home the third run.

The Britons tied the game in the third, loading the bases with nobody out. Craig Hitchcock plated one run with a sacrifice fly, and after a walk re-loaded the sacks, Thurston hit a chopper to third. McComas got the force at third for the second out, but his throw to first sailed wide, with 2 runs scoring on the play.

Hronis was 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored for Ohio Wesleyan, while Dote finished with 2 hits and 2 runs scored.

Junior righthander Greg Vasami (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) worked 5.1 innings, striking out 2, to pick up the win for the Bishops. Senior righthander Nick Horn (Dublin/Scioto) pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief and senior righthander Mike Schleiden (Canton/Massillon Perry) pitched a scoreless ninth for his first collegiate save.

Gunderson was the starting and losing pitcher for Albion.
