Freshman outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) smashed a bases-loaded triple to give the Bishops a 3-0 first-inning lead, and senior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) lined a 2-run single to highlight a 4-run second inning that helped Ohio Wesleyan complete a sweep of Defiance in non-conference play on Friday in Port Charlotte, Fla.
In the opener, senior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto), junior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) and sophomore third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) drove in 2 runs apiece to help the Bishops to the win.
The Bishops loaded the bases in the first inning of the nightcap with walks to senior second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights), McDaniel and junior outfielder Matt Rhode (Port Clinton) before Frentsos cleared them with a triple.
In the second, McComas drew a 1-out walk and Johnson followed with a walk before McDaniel singled to load the bases. Hronis walked to force in a run before Dote's single plated Johnson and McDaniel to stretch the Bishop lead to 6-1. Rhode's RBI double later in the inning made it a 7-1 game.
The Bishops added 2 runs in the sixth on McDaniel's sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Hronis.
Hronis finished with 2 hits, while Johnson scored 3 runs and McDaniel and McComas each scored twice.
Freshman righthander Eric Livingston (Delaware/Hayes) scattered 7 hits over the first 5.0 innings to pick up his first collegiate victory. Senior righthander Nick Horn (Dublin/Scioto) pitched 2.0 innings of hitless relief.
The opener saw the Bishops take a 2-0 lead right out of the gate as Johnson led off the game with a single, McDaniel followed with a triple and Hronis delivered a sacrifice fly to score McDaniel.
In the second, sophomore catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) opened the inning by reaching on an error and senior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) was hit by a pitch before McComas singled to load the bases. Johnson delivered a sacrifice fly to score Ruygrok and Hronis followed with an RBI single for a 4-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
The Bishops added 3 runs in the sixth on a 2-run triple by McComas and an RBI ground out from McDaniel.
McComas went 3-for-3, while Johnson and Hronis had 2 hits apiece for the Bishops.
Senior righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) pitched the complete game, allowing 7 hits while striking out 5 and walking 1.
