March 22, 2008

[ Eric McComas ] Sophomore third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) singled in a run that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 2-0 lead, but Wabash's Shaun Rico hit a 3-run homer in the top of the seventh inning as the Little Giants completed a sweep of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Saturday at Littick Field.

In the opener, the Little Giants got home runs from Matt Dodaro and Jake Thomas and never trailed on the way to the win.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap when sophomore catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice by senior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview). McComas was hit by a pitch and was forced at second by senior second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights). Wabash pitcher Andy Weeks then caught Johnson leaning off first base, but Johnson stayed in a rundown long enough to allow Ruygrok to score for a 1-0 Bishop lead.

The Bishops increased the lead to 2-0 in the fourth on consecutive 2-out singles by Ruygrok, Wilkins and McComas.

Wabash took the lead in the top of the seventh when Thomas singled with one out and was forced at second by Dodaro. Tanner Coggins followed with a single before Rico launched a home run to right center to give the Little Giants the lead.

Senior righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier), who had blanked Wabash on one hit through the first 6.0 innings, pitched the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan, striking out 6 and walking none.

Weeks worked the complete game for Wabash, fanning 5.

In the opener, Dodaro homered for a 1-0 Wabash lead in the second and the Little Giants made it a 2-0 game in the third on a double by Joel Bustamante and a single by P.J. Tyson.

The Bishops closed to within 2-1 on a solo shot by junior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) in the bottom of the third.

Thomas smacked a 2-run homer in the sixth and Nathan Schrader plated an insurance run in the seventh to account for the 5-1 final.

Senior righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) struck out 3 in pitching the complete game for the Bishops.

Mike Korfhagen pitched the complete game for Wabash, striking out 9.
