![]() Heidelberg 14, Ohio Wesleyan 3 March 25, 2008 Things started out in promising fashion for the Battling Bishops, as senior second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) opened the first inning with a flare to left center and senior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) followed with a textbook bunt single. Heidelberg starter Jake Gossman was able to get out of the inning without any further damage, however, and the Bishop bats were silenced after that, as Ohio Wesleyan did not get another hit until there were 2 out in the bottom of the ninth. Meanwhile, the Student Princes took a 2-0 lead in the second. Cody James walked to lead off the inning and Biagio Boytim followed with a grounder to short, but Johnson dropped the relay throw from junior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) and all hands were safe. Tony Pawlowicz walked to load the bases and Jack Bault followed with a sacrifice fly to score James. Steve Decker added an RBI single later in the frame for a 2-0 lead. The Student Princes added 4 runs in the third, with Pawlowicz and Jason Lash stroking 2-run singles, and 4 more runs in the fourth, highlighted by RBI doubles from Boytim and Bault. Lash also had a 2-run triple during Heidelberg's 3-run sixth. Ohio Wesleyan got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth when Heidelberg reliever Bryan Hartman walked 4 straight Bishop batters to open the inning, with a pass to freshman second baseman Josh Gardner (Youngstown/Boardman) forcing in the Bishops' first run. Freshman outfielder Jason Crouse (Darien, Conn.) plated a run with an infield out and senior catcher Eric Stitzlein (Loudonville) later scored on a wild pitch. Freshman righthander Eric Livingston (Delaware/Hayes) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan. Gossman picked up the win for Heidelberg, striking out 8 during his 6.0 innings of work. |
