March 29, 2008

[ Sean Speed ] Senior righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) fired a 3-hit shutout and junior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) scored the go-ahead run and drove in a pair of insurance runs as Ohio Wesleyan won the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader against Denison on Saturday in Granville.

In the opener, Hronis singled in a run during a 3-run third inning, but Denison rallied to send the game into extra innings and pushed across a run in the 10th to take the win.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap, loading the bases with 2 out as Hronis singled, senior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) walked and senior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) was hit by a pitch. Sophomore third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) then hit the ball to Big Red shortstop Andy Johnson, whose error allowed Hronis to score.

The Bishops added a run in the fourth when freshman outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) led off with a single, moved to second on a passed ball, took third on an infield out and scored on an infield out by senior second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights).

Frentsos led off the Ohio Wesleyan sixth with a double and Johnson was hit by a pitch before both runners scored on Hronis's double.

Speed allowed only one Denison runner to reach second base. He gave up a 1-out single to Park Smith in the second, a 1-out single to Danny Pritz in the sixth and a 2-out single to Tony Christopher in the seventh. Speed struck out 2 and walked one.

In the opener, the Bishops took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Junior outfielder Matt Rhode (Port Clinton) reached on an error by Big Red third baseman Kevin Teague to lead off the inning, then Johnson and senior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) singled to load the bases. Hronis singled in Rhode and Wilkins followed with a sacrifice fly, and the final run scored on a Denison error.

The Big Red closed to within 3-2 on Alex Horn's 2-run single in the fifth and tied the game in the sixth when Aidan Lucas, Smith and Christopher rapped consecutive 2-out singles.

Ohio Wesleyan loaded the bases with 2 outs in the 10th as McComas doubled and sophomore catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) and sophomore outfielder Jared Turner (Versailles) drew consecutive walks, but junior catcher Josh Dougherty (Hilliard/Davidson) struck out to end the threat.

Justin Held singled to lead off the bottom of the 10th for Denison, moved to second on a sacrifice, and after John Schleer struck out, scored the winning run on Smith's single.

McDaniel, Hronis and McComas each had 2 hits for Ohio Wesleyan.

Senior righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) pitched the complete game for the Bishops, striking out 2 and walking 3.
