![]() Ohio Wesleyan 13, Earlham 0 April 5, 2008 The Bishops raced to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the opener. Senior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) reached on an error by Quaker shortstop Andrew Morrical and moved to second on a sacrifice. Junior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) walked and sophomore third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) was hit by a pitch to load the bases for senior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne), who plated McDaniel with an infield out. Senior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) followed with a home run to straightaway center to cap the 4-run frame. The Bishops added single runs in the second and third, then McDaniel and freshman outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) drove in runs in the fourth to stretch the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 8-0. Senior catcher Eric Stitzlein (Loudonville) drove in a run and junior outfielder Matt Rhode (Port Clinton) had a 2-run single during Ohio Wesleyan's 4-run fifth, and junior catcher Josh Dougherty (Hilliard/Davidson) singled in a run in the sixth to account for the 13-0 final. Jones did not allow a hit until Jake Carr singled with one out in the fourth inning, and he did not allow a runner past second base during his 6.0 innings of work. He struck out 5 and walked one. Senior righthander Mike Schleiden (Canton/Massillon Perry) worked a scoreless seventh to complete the 3-hit shutout. Alex Anderson was the starting and losing pitcher for Earlham. In the nightcap, Dote put the Bishops ahead to stay with a solo homer in the second, then singled and eventually scored on a hit by senior second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights). McComas and Wilkins drove in runs in the fifth to give the Bishops a 4-0 lead. Earlham rallied with a pair of runs in the sixth, with Anderson lining an RBI double and coming around to score on a throwing error by Hronis, but Speed got out of the inning without any further damage. Speed struck out 3 and walked one while holding the Quakers to 3 hits. Corey Murray was the starting and losing pitcher for Earlham. |
