April 6, 2008

[ Joey McDaniel ] Senior lefthander Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) fired a 5-hit shutout in the opener and drove in the game-winning run in support of sophomore righthander Matthew Struble (Defiance/Edon) in the nightcap as as Ohio Wesleyan swept a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader from Earlham on Sunday at Littick Field.

The Bishops took the lead in the second inning of the opener as senior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) singled and moved to second when Quaker first baseman Corey Murray mishandled a grounder off the bat of senior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview). Sophomore catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) followed with a double down the rightfield line, scoring Dote, before Wilkins and Ruygrok scored on a throwing error by Earlham second baseman Eric Sturgeon.

Junior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) led off the third with a home run to left, then plated a run in the fifth with an infield out. Freshman outfielder Scott Wise (Delaware/Hayes) capped the Bishop scoring with an RBI single in the sixth.

McDaniel blanked Earlham on 5 hits, stranding runners at third base in the second and fourth innings. He struck out 6 and walked 3 and supported his own cause with 2 hits and a run scored.

Adam Painter scattered 7 hits in working the complete game for Earlham.

In the nightcap, Struble and Earlham's Randy Kerns locked up in a pitchers' duel, with the Bishops scratching out a pair of runs to come out on top.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the third when senior second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) led off with a single, stole second and scored on McDaniel's single through the right side.

The Bishops added a run after 2 were out in the fourth. Wilkins singled, Ruygrok followed with a single and Johnson walked to load the bases. Wise followed with a grounder to Murray at first base, but Kerns could not handle Murray's throw at the bag and all hands were safe, with Wilkins scoring for a 2-0 Bishop lead.

That would be enough of a cushion for Struble, who allowed only 2 Quaker runners to reach second base. He allowed 4 singles while fanning 10 and walking 3.

Kerns, who also did not allow an extra-base hit in the game, absorbed the mound decision for Earlham.
