Capital 19, Ohio Wesleyan 8

April 7, 2008

Junior outfielder Matt Rhode (Port Clinton) doubled home 2 runs as the Bishops jumped to a 3-0 lead, but Capital erupted for 8 runs in the bottom of the second and added 6 more in the sixth in taking a non-conference decision from Ohio Wesleyan on Monday in Columbus.

Senior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) led off the game with a single, took second on a wild pitch, moved to third on an infield out and scored on a single by junior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) for a 1-0 Bishop lead, and after a single by sophomore third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves), Rhode doubled home both runners to put Ohio Wesleyan up 3-0.

The Crusaders got one run back on Tom Stevison's solo homer in the bottom of the first, then parlayed 7 hits, a walk and a Bishop error into 8 runs in the bottom of the second. Mike St. John's bases-loaded triple, a solo homer by Zach Byers and a 2-run single by Andy Daggett highlighted the frame for Capital.

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 9-6 in the top of the third, with Hronis and senior first baseman Caleb Douce (Caledonia/River Valley) opening the inning with singles. McComas forced Douce at second, with Hronis scoring on the play, before Rhode doubled home McComas and took third on the throw and would eventually score on a sacrifice fly.

Capital added 2 runs in the fifth and collected 7 hits in their 6-run sixth, with Ryan Hutchison's RBI triple and Chris Stembridge's 2-run homer the big hits.

Rhode went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI, while McComas was 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored.

Junior righthander Greg Vasami (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
