[ Xander Jones ] Senior righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) fired a 4-hit shutout as Ohio Wesleyan won the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader against Wittenberg on Saturday in Springfield.

In the nightcap, Wittenberg's Tim Antil returned the favor with a 3-hit shutout to give the Tigers a split of the twinbill.

Ohio Wesleyan jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on a bases-loaded double by senior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview).

That would be more than enough for Jones, who stranded runners at third in the fourth and sixth innings. He struck out 2 and walked one while allowing 4 hits.

Ohio Wesleyan added a pair of runs in the sixth on a 2-run triple by sophomore catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek). The Bishops broke the game open with 8 runs in the seventh, with senior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) hitting a 2-run homer and freshman outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) belting a 2-run double to highlight the Ohio Wesleyan uprising.

Bobby Ciucki was the starting and losing pitcher for Wittenberg.

In the nightcap, the Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first when Joel Puthoff led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice, took third on a fly ball and scored on a single by Jeremey Fruhwirth.

Wittenberg added to its lead with a 2-run single by Patrick Williams in the third and a 2-run single by Matt Steinke in the sixth.

Antil shut down the Bishop offense on 3 hits. Ohio Wesleyan had 2 runners on base in the first, fourth, sixth and seventh innings but could not get them across the plate

Senior righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) scattered 6 hits while striking out 5 and walking one in receiving the mound decision for Ohio Wesleyan.
