Ohio Wesleyan 6, Otterbein 5

[ Logan Hronis ] Junior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) singled in a pair of runs as Ohio Wesleyan built a 6-1 lead and held on to defeat Otterbein in non-conference play on Tuesday at Littick Field.

The Bishops took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) led off with a walk, took second on a sacrifice, moved to third on an infield out and scored when Cardinal second baseman Brandon Mauck threw wildly to first on a grounder by sophomore third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves).

Ohio Wesleyan added 3 runs in the third on consecutive RBI singles by McDaniel, freshman outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) and Hronis, and the Bishops made it 5-0 in the fifth on a run-scoring double by sophomore catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek).

Otterbein got on the scoreboard in the sixth when Chris Kovanda doubled, tagged up and moved to third on Charlie Edwards's fly ball to deep right, and scored on an infield out.

The Bishops got that run back in the bottom of the sixth as Frentsos smashed a one-out double and scored on a single by Hronis.

Otterbein made it close in the eighth, stringing together 5 straight hits. Included the Cardinal frame were a 2-run double by Brian Hiscox and a 2-run single by John Sansbury, but freshman righthander Eric Livingston (Delaware/Hayes) got out of the inning with the lead and worked a scoreless ninth to seal the game.

Hronis was 3-for-5 with 2 RBI for Ohio Wesleyan, while Frentsos and senior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) had 2 hits apiece.

Junior righthander Greg Vasami (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) pitched the first 7.0 innings, allowing 4 hits and one run. Livingston worked the final 2.0 innings.

Brandon Gessner was the starting and losing pitcher for Otterbein.
