Wooster 14, Ohio Wesleyan 7

[ Joey McDaniel ]Senior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) ripped a 2-run single during a 3-run second inning that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 4-3 lead, but Wooster scored 9 runs in the sixth to break open the first game of a North Coast Athletic Conference tournament semifinal series on Saturday at Wooster.

Game 2 of the best-of-3 series is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday in Wooster, with the third game to follow if necessary. Ohio Wesleyan would have to win both games on Sunday to advance to the NCAC tournament finals on May 8-9.

The Bishops took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as McDaniel and freshman outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) opened the frame with singles. One out later, sophomore third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) grounded to second, and Fighting Scot second baseman Matthew Pierce threw wildly on the play, allowing McDaniel to score.

Wooster bounced back with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning. Sean Karpen led off with a single and Jake Sankal was hit by a pitch. One out later, Matt Groezinger doubled in Karpen and Dan Skulina singled home Sankal and Groezinger.

Ohio Wesleyan got those 3 runs back in the top of the second. Senior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne), sophomore catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) and senior second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) opened the inning with singles to load the bases. McDaniel followed with a single to score Dote and Ruygrok, and after Frentsos moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice, junior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) lofted a fly ball to center to score Johnson for a 4-3 Bishop lead.

Wooster took the lead in the fourth on solo homers by Bubba O'Donnell and Sankal, and the Scots broke the game open with 9 runs in the sixth, highlighted by a 2-run single by Matthew Johnson, a 2-run double by Shane Swearingen and a 2-run homer by O'Donnell.

Freshman outfielder Scott Wise (Delaware/Hayes) belted a 3-run homer in the eighth to finish off the Ohio Wesleyan scoring.

Senior righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.

Adam Samson worked the first 7.0 innings to record the win for Wooster.
