May 16, 2008

[ Steve Ruygrok ]Sophomore catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) singled in a run to give Ohio Wesleyan a 1-0 lead, but Eastern Connecticut State rallied for a win in Game 10 of the NCAA Division III New York Regional tournament on Friday in Auburn, N.Y.

Ohio Wesleyan is eliminated from the tournament, while Eastern Connecticut State advances to face Montclair (N.J.) State in an elimination game at 7:45 p.m. on Friday.

The Bishops took the lead in the second inning when senior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) led off with a double, moved to third on an infield out, and scored on Ruygrok's 2-out single.

ECSU evened the game in the fourth as Jon Dalton led off with a double and Melvin Castillo followed with a walk. One out later, Ruygrok cut down Dalton trying to steal third, with Castillo checking into second on the back end of the double steal attempt. Andrew Dewing followed with a bloop single down the leftfield line to score Castillo with the tying run.

The Warriors broke the deadlock in the fifth. Travis Bass led off with an infield single and Ismael Bolorin followed with a single, sending Bass to third. Andrew Magliola followed with a bouncer to senior second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) that took a high hop at the last minute, but Johnson recovered to force Bolorin at second, with Bass scoring the go-ahead run on the play. John Parke then lashed a ball into the leftfield corner, with Magliola scoring when freshman outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) misplayed the ball in the corner. Parke moved to third on Dalton's infield out, and Castillo was hit by a pitch. Shawn Gilblair followed with a single, scoring Parke and sending Castillo to third, and the Warriors pushed across the final run when Gilblair took off for second and got into a rundown, which lasted long enough for Castillo to score.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the sixth as senior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) walked and sophomore third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) singled with 2 out, but ECSU starter Jimmy Jagodzinski got out of the inning and went on to finish the complete game.

McComas and freshman outfielder Scott Wise (Delaware/Hayes) had 2 hits apiece for Ohio Wesleyan.

Senior lefthander Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.
