Junior midfielder Tara Porter (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire (Mass.) School) scored what proved to be
the game-winning goal and the Ohio Wesleyan defense preserved the lead
by shutting out Wittenberg in the second half as the Bishops edged the
Tigers in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday in Springfield.
The win was Ohio Wesleyan's first over Wittenberg since Sept. 1, 1999,
snapping a string of 16 straight losses to the Tigers.
Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when freshman attacker
Christa Cocumelli (Dublin/Bishop Watterson) took a pass from freshman
midfielder Hannah Coughlin (Dublin/Scioto) and nudged a shot past Wittenberg
keeper Sarah Umberger.
The Tigers evened the score 4 minutes later on Boo Vernon's unassisted
goal.
Ohio Wesleyan answered with Porter's unassisted goal with 12:27 left in
the first half.
Wittenberg outshot the Bishops, 6-0, during the second half, but the Ohio
Wesleyan defense held the lead, with senior goalkeeper Katie Jones (Pine
Plains, N.Y./Stissing Mountain) stopping all 6 shots.
Wittenberg
outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 9-5. Jones
finished with 8 saves for Ohio Wesleyan, while Umberger was credited with
3 saves.
