Ohio Wesleyan 3, Earlham 0

Oct. 17, 2007

Freshman attacker Lilly Jianas (Shawnee Mission, Kan./Pembroke Hill) scored to kick off a 3-goal, second-half eruption that lifted Ohio Wesleyan over Earlham in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday at Selby Field.

The teams battled through a scoreless first half, with Earlham keeper Katherine McDonough stopping first Jianas and then junior midfielder Shannon McHenry (Powell/Rancho Buena Vista (Calif.)) on shots off Ohio Wesleyan corners.

Later, Ohio Wesleyan keeper Katie Jones (Pine Plains, N.Y./Stissing Mountain) stopped a pair of shots off the stick of Cassie Cage to preserve the scoreless tie.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute when freshman midfielder Jessica Wright (Lancaster) sent the ball in from the left side to Jianas, who finished the chance in front of the Quaker cage.

The Bishops put the game out of reach with a pair of goals less than a minute apart. Senior defender Diana Boryczewski (Kensington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) blasted a shot which glanced off an Earlham defender and into the cage with 8:40 left in regulation time.

Shortly thereafter, freshman attacker Christa Cocumelli (Dublin/Bishop Watterson) won the ball near midfield and made a long run up the middle, then finished with a shot that found the back of the Earlham cage with 8:05 remaining.

The Quakers threatened in the closing minutes, first earning a corner and then getting shots from Nicole VanScyoc and Anna Benfield, but sophomore keeper Krista Murray (Rochester Hills, Mich./University Liggett) was there to stop the first shot and the second shot was wide.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Earlham, 20-5. Jones and Murray each made 2 saves in the Ohio Wesleyan goal. McDonough finished with 10 saves in the Quaker cage.
