at OWU/Strimer Memorial Invitational

[ Jesse Chiero ]Sophomore Jesse Chiero (Westerville/South) and sophomore Jordan Benner (Beavercreek) were leading Ohio Wesleyan after the first round of the Strimer Memorial Invitational on Saturday at Oakhaven Golf Club.

Ohio Wesleyan had a first-round total of 299, taking a 6-shot lead over Olivet. Wittenberg was in third place at 312, followed by Tri-State (314), Denison (319), DePauw (324), Wooster (331), Wabash (333), Hiram (349), Oberlin (361), and Kenyon (367).

Chiero and Benner were tied for second place among individuals, each with a 73. Tri-State's Shawn Floyd had the individual lead with a first-round 72.

Junior Jeff Nieman (Maineville/Cincinnati Moeller) was tied for fifth place with a 74, junior Kyle Martin (Dublin/Wellington) was tied for 15th place at 79 and junior Andy Schillig (Pataskala/Licking Heights) was tied for 35th place with an 83.

Ohio Wesleyan players competing as individuals included sophomore Tommy Harman (Perrysburg), who was tied for 11th place with a 78; and junior Adam Claytor (Columbus/Wellington), who was tied for 22nd place at 81.

The tournament's second round is scheduled for Sunday.

The Strimer Memorial Invitational honors the memory of coach Bob Strimer, who was involved in Ohio Wesleyan athletics for over half a century. During his tenure at Ohio Wesleyan, he served as athletics director for 22 years. He also served as head basketball coach, head golf coach, head baseball coach and was an assistant coach in football and track & field. After his retirement, Strimer remained active in athletics, alumni and development affairs for over 2 decades.
