Ohio Wesleyan 84, Oberlin 69

[ Jesse Jean ]Senior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) and junior wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) scored 4 points apiece during a 16-2 first-half run, and Ohio Wesleyan held off a stubborn Oberlin comeback to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Yeomen on Wednesday in Oberlin.

Senior guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles) opened the scoring with a 3-pointer on the first possession of the game, and Oberlin countered with a lay-in by Mike Loll to come within 3-2, but the Bishops would hold the Yeomen to one basket during the next 5 minutes of play.

Meanwhile, senior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) and senior wing Brian Cafarella (Westerville/North) hit 3-pointers, Holliday added a lay-in, Jean sank a pair of free throws, Holliday scored on a tip-in, Teeters followed with a tip-in and Jean hit a fast-break lay-in to stretch the Bishop lead to 19-4 with 14:35 left in the first half.

Ryan Magiera ended the Bishop run with a lay-in, and a Magiera fast-break lay-in later in the half would bring the Yeomen within 26-14 at the 10:30 mark.

Cafarella and Teeters hit 3-pointers during an 8-0 run that extended the Bishop lead to 42-18, but Loll brought the Yeomen back by scoring 8 points during a 9-0 run that cut the deficit to 42-27.

Oberlin came within 46-34 on Loll's jumper early in the second half, but 3-pointers from Rudegeair and Teeters and 7 straight points from Jean once again put the Bishop lead above 20 points, with Ohio Wesleyan holding a 59-38 advantage with 14:23 left in regulation time.

The Yeomen came back with a 13-0 run, with Omari Hall hitting a 3-pointer and Matthew Godwin draining a couple more 3-pointers, and when Noah Goldman hit a jumper from the lane, the Yeomen were within 59-51 ith 11:39 to play, and another Godwin 3-pointer brought the Yeomen within 61-54 with 11:00 on the clock.

Oberlin was still within 64-56 when the Bishops pulled away with a 7-0 run that featured a basket and a 3-point play from Jean and free throws from Holliday and Cafarella. The Bishop defense held the Yeomen scoreless for nearly 4 minutes, and when Loll ended the Oberlin drought with a jumper at the 5:20 mark, the Bishop lead was still 71-58 and would remain in double digits for the rest of the game.

Jean led the Bishops with a career-high 27 points, going 9-for-12 both from the field and from the stripe, and grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds. Holliday finished with 13 points, Cafarella scored 12 points and Teeters added 11 points and a game-high 5 assists.

Loll led the Yeomen with 26 points and 7 rebounds. Hall added 12 points and Goldman scored 10 points.
