Ohio Wesleyan 98, Baldwin-Wallace 68

Nov. 24, 2007

[ Kyle Holliday ]Junior wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) buried three 3-pointers during a 19-0 first-half run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and the Bishops pulled away during the second half to defeat 20th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace in the first round of the University of Rochester HIA Tournament on Saturday in Rochester, N.Y.

Ohio Wesleyan will face host ninth-ranked Rochester, a 72-50 winner over Cortland State in Saturday's other first-round game, in the championship game on Sunday.

The Bishops trailed, 11-9, just under 3 minutes into the game when senior guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles) hit a 3-pointer that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay. Senior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) followed with a jumper and Holliday and senior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) added 3-pointers before back-to-back Holliday 3-pointers stretched the margin to 28-11 with 12:16 left in the half.

Ohio Wesleyan held a 49-32 lead with 1:12 remaining in the half when the Yellow Jackets got back into the game with a 9-0 run. Tyler Sekerak hit a 3-pointer, and after a Bishop turnover, Kyle Brown converted a 4-point play. Zane Meeder finished the run with a lay-in just before the buzzer that sliced the deficit to 49-41 at halftime.

Baldwin-Wallace was still within 52-43 on Brendan Schuler's lay-in early in the second half, but that was as close as the Yellow Jackets would come. Ohio Wesleyan got the margin back into double digits with consecutive baskets by Rudegeair, and stretched the margin to 20 points on Teeters' 3-pointer with just under 6 minutes to go.

Rudegeair led the Bishops with 25 points and 12 rebounds, both career bests. Teeters added 14 points, while Holliday and Jean finished with 11 points apiece. Senior wing Brian Cafarella (Westerville/North) dished out a team-high 5 assists.

Schuler scored 20 points to lead Baldwin-Wallace. Kyle Brown added 13 points, Andrew Bene scored 11 points and Sekerak had 10 points for the Yellow Jackets.
