Ohio Wesleyan 12, Kenyon 8

[ Chris Eccles ]Senior midfielder Chris Eccles (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) scored twice to kick off a game-ending 4-0 run as Ohio Wesleyan defeated North Coast Athletic Conference rival Kenyon in a first-round game of the NCAA Division III playoffs on Wednesday in Gambier.

Ohio Wesleyan advances to the second round to face defending national champion Salisbury on Saturday in Salisbury, Md.

The game was tied, 7-7, going into the fourth quarter, and goals by senior midfielder Trevor Jones (Flanders, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Kenyon's Jordan Zimolka left matters deadlocked at 8-8 with 11:27 remaining in regulation time.

Eccles then put the Bishops ahead to stay with an unassisted goal with 9:51 remaning, and less than a minute later, Eccles found the back of the net again, ringing up another unassisted goal to make it a 10-8 game.

Senior attacker Harrison Iuliano (Mendham, N.J./Blair Academy) followed with a goal with 5:09 to play and sophomore attacker Rob Young (Langhorne, Pa./Council Rock South) finished off the Bishop scoring with an unassisted goal with 3:53 remaining.

The Lords got on the scoreboard first on John Crain's goal with 11:01 left in the first quarter, but it took Ohio Wesleyan less than a minute to respond as the Bishops evened the game on a man-up score by senior midfielder Steve Fowler (Wilton, Conn.) with 10:27 to go.

Junior midfielder Connor McGowan (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) and Kenyon's Nate Pritchard traded goals later in the first quarter, which ended in a 2-2 deadlock.

Ohio Wesleyan broke on top early in the second quarter, getting a man-up score from Iuliano and a goal from Eccles to take 4-2 lead, then stretched the lead to 5-2 when sophomore midfielder Chaz Narwicz (Yardley, PA/Holy Ghost Prep) scored with 5:43 left in the half.

The Bishops still led, 7-4, late in the third quarter when a man-up score by Brett Fuller started a Kenyon comeback, and goals by Zach Wallace and Fuller during the final 2 minutes of the quarter pulled the Lords even at 7-7.

Eccles led the Bishops with 4 goals, while Iuliano contributed 3 goals and 2 assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Jud Hall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) was credited with 13 saves in the Ohio Wesleyan goal.

Pritchard led Kenyon with 2 goals and 2 assists, while Fuller scored twice. David Page stopped 5 shots in the Kenyon cage.
