Salisbury 13, Ohio Wesleyan 5

[ Chris Eccles ]Senior midfielder Chris Eccles (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and senior attacker Harrison Iuliano (Mendham, N.J./Blair Academy) scored to give Ohio Wesleyan a 2-1 first-quarter lead, but defending national champion Salisbury used a 5-0 second-quarter run to take the lead for good and went on to defeat the Bishops in a second-round NCAA Division III playoff matchup on Saturday in Salisbury, Md.

The Sea Gulls took a 1-0 lead on Jake DeLillo's unassisted goal.

Eccles answered for Ohio Wesleyan, scoring just over a minute later to tie the game at 1-1, and Iuliano followed with a score off a pass from senior midfielder Steve Fowler (Wilton, Conn.) to give the Bishops a 2-1 lead with 6:07 left in the first quarter.

Salisbury evened the game at 2-2 on Matt Hickman's goal, and the first quarter ended with that deadlock intact.

Junior attacker Nick Gallagher (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) gave the Bishops a 3-2 lead with an unassisted goal early in the second quarter, but the Sea Gulls answered with Hickman's goal 11 seconds later, and Bruce Richardson followed with a score that gave the hosts a 4-3 lead with 11:03 left in the half.

Salisbury ended nearly 8 minutes of scoreless action with Richardson's goal with 3:39 left in the quarter, and Richardson added another score at the 2:13 mark before Hickman scored with 1:33 remaining, giving the Sea Gulls a 7-3 lead at halftime. Richardson then scored midway through the third quarter to make it an 8-3 game.

Gallagher responded for the Bishops by recording a man-up goal off an Iuliano feed to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 8-4 with 6:56 left in the third quarter, but the Sea Gulls put the game out of reach by scoring the next 5 goals, holding the Bishops off the scoreboard until Fowler's goal in the closing seconds of the game.

Gallagher led the Bishops with 2 goals and an assist. Iuliano and Fowler each contributed a goal and an assist.

Freshman Jud Hall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) made 13 saves in 57-plus minutes in the Ohio Wesleyan goal. Senior Ryan Perone (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) had 1 save during his fourth-quarter stint between the pipes.

Hickman had 4 goals and an assist for Salisbury, while Richardson scored 4 goals and DeLillo had 3 goals. Kylor Berkman dished out 4 assists for the Sea Gulls. Zach Krissoff stopped 11 shots in the Sea Gull cage.
