After a Calvin foul, the Blue Streaks had a restart about 22 yards from the Calvin goal. Alex Bernot sent the ball into the middle of the Knight penalty area, and McKinney headed it home for the game's only goal.

Calvin enjoyed the edge in play early, peppering shots at John Carroll keeper Matt DeMarchi. After a corner kick in the fifth minute, Calvin's Luke Holtrop redirected the ball into the box but DeMarchi was there for the save. Six minutes later, Jared Litty ripped a shot from 25 yards which DeMarchi grabbed at the top left corner of the goal.

The Knights' best chance of the first half came in the 17th minute, when Scott Hooker had 2 shots from a pack in front of the John Carroll goal, but DeMarchi stopped both. Nick Capisciolto followed with a shot, but Blue Streak defender Joe Ciacci cleared the ball off the goal line to preserve the scoreless tie.

John Carroll had a pair of scoring chances later in the half, but Calvin keeper Darrin Cline thwarted Bernot both times.

Calvin turned up the pressure even more at the beginning of the second half, with Michael Holwerda collecting 3 shots during the first 12 minutes. Holwerda's third shot was tipped wide by DeMarchi, giving the Knights a corner kick, and Kyle Billin's shot off the corner kick was cleared off the line by John Carroll's Louis Kastelic.

The Knights kept up the pressure after the Blue Streaks took the lead, with Holwerda jumping on a loose ball in the John Carroll penalty area but sending a shot wide of the goal, then seeing DeMarchi grab Capisciolto's header off a corner kick in the 81st minute.

Calvin's last dangerous chance came in the 83rd minute, when Scott Hooker's shot from close range was cleared off the line by John Carroll's Michael Zumerling.

Calvin outshot John Carroll, 29-9. DeMarchi finished with 10 saves for John Carroll, while Cline had 2 saves for Calvin.
