Senior
midfielder Nick Skoczen (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) scored twice and the Bishop
defense turned in a fine effort to help the Ohio Wesleyan men's soccer
team to a season-opening win over Guilford in first-round action of the
annual Fred Myers Invitational on Friday at Roy Rike Field.
Ohio
Wesleyan will face Kean, a 1-0 victor over Hope in Friday's lidlifter,
at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in the tournament championship game. Saturday's
consolation game matches Guilford against Hope, with that game set for
a 5 p.m. kickoff.
Skoczen put the Bishops on the scoreboard by converting a penalty kick
in the 22nd minute.
Despite enjoying the edge in play for most of the second half, the Bishops
did not add to their lead until the 82nd minute, when junior forward Todd
Ufferman (Delaware/Hayes) sent a centering pass to Skoczen, who finished
the chance for a 2-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
Ohio Wesleyan slammed the door on the Quakers when freshman forward Tyler
Bryant (Chillicothe/Unioto) passed the ball inside to freshman forward
Tyler Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington). Wall got past a pair of Guilford
defenders and bounced a shot off the left post and in to account for the
3-0 final.
The Bishop defense held Guilford to 4 shots. None of the Quaker shots
reached the Bishop goal, as senior goalkeeper Jamison Dague (Bexley) was
not forced to make a save on the evening.
Ohio
Wesleyan outshot Guilford, 24-4. Beau Arceneaux finished with 5 saves
for the Quakers.
In Friday's opener, Kean's
Anthony Tuesta scored with 17:38 left in the first half to lift the Cougars
over Hope.
Hope had the game's first good scoring chance when Chris Harrison ripped
a shot from the top of the box which skimmed off the top of the crossbar.
The Cougars took the lead when Konrad Kruczek sent a through ball to Tuesta,
who moved the ball upfield and snuck a shot just inside the left post.
The Flying Dutchmen defense preserved the 1-0 lead midway through the
second half. Kean's Jerry Saintil brought the ball into the box and eluded
Hope keeper Michael Amerman, but Hope defenders blocked a pair of Cougar
shots near the goal line to keep the Flying Dutchmen in the game.
Kyle Crego was credited with 1 save for Kean, while Amerman had 7 saves
in the Hope goal.
