Hope 1, Guilford 0

Sept. 1, 2007

Kean's Jerry Saintil broke a scoreless tie and the Cougars' Damien Serafin added an insurance goal to give Kean a win over Ohio Wesleyan in the championship game of the Fred Myers Invitational on Saturday night at Roy Rike Field.

The loss ends Ohio Wesleyan's school-record regular-season unbeaten streak at 44 games. The Battling Bishops' last loss at home was a 2-0 decision to Wooster on Sept. 29, 2004.

Saintil put Kean on the board in the 13th minute, uncorking a shot from about 30 yards which curled into the Bishop goal.

Kean goalkeeper Kyle Crego preserved the lead midway through the first half, breaking up a crossing pass from senior midfielder Nick Skoczen (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) intended for junior forward Todd Ufferman (Delaware/Hayes).

The Cougars added to their lead in the 31st minute when Serafin picked up a loose ball in the Ohio Wesleyan end and broke in alone on senior goalkeeper Jamison Dague (Bexley). Serafin converted the shot for a 2-0 margin.

Kean threatened to increase its lead early in the second half, earning a corner kick in the 52nd minute, but Pedro Zamora's shot was blocked by the Bishop defense and Dague grabbed Tomasz Bodyziak's shot off the offensive rebound.

Ohio Wesleyan assembled some chances down the stretch, but Crego was able to keep the shutout going. Crego got some help from the goalkeeper's best friend when freshman midfielder Ryan Harmanis (Hilliard/Davidson) blasted a shot off the right post with 17:02 to go. Sophomore forward Eric Francis (Alliance/Marlington) had his shot from the top of the box saved by Crego in the 81st minute, and Crego batted Ufferman's header wide of the right post in the 88th minute.

Each team had 14 shots in the game. Dague finished with 3 saves, while Crego had 4 saves for the Cougars.

In Saturday's opener, Hope scored in the early going and held on to defeat Guilford in the Myers Invitational consolation game.

Kevin Isaac jumped on a loose ball in the box and deposited it past Quaker keeper Patrick Childs with 31:32 left in the first half.

Robert Del Greco scored midway through the second half to lift Allegheny over Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The play started when Nathaniel Yates drove in from the right and fired a shot on Titan keeper Derek Christiansen. Christiansen made the save but the ball caromed to his right and right to an onrushing Del Greco, who jumped on the rebound and deposited it inside the left post.

Hope outshot Guilford, 25-5. Michael Amerman had 2 saves for Hope, while Childs finished with 9 saves.

Kean's Saintil received the Dick Gauthier Award as the Myers Invitational's Most Valuable Player.

Ohio Wesleyan was represented on the all-tournament team by Skoczen, Harmanis and freshman back Eric Laipple (Westerville/South).

The Fred Myers Invitational, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Delaware County, has been one of the featured events on the Battling Bishops' schedule for 30 seasons. It honors Fred Myers, longtime soccer and lacrosse coach at Ohio Wesleyan.
