Ohio Wesleyan 3, DePauw 0
Sept. 14, 2007
Freshman back Eric Laipple (Westerville/South) converted a direct kick to put Ohio Wesleyan on the scoreboard and freshman forward Tyler Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) contributed a goal and an assist in the second half to help Ohio Wesleyan to a non-conference win over 21st-ranked DePauw on Friday at Roy Rike Field.
DePauw had the game's first scoring chances when Mike Harris put a pair of shots on goal during the first 5 minutes of play, but Ohio Wesleyan keeper Jamison Dague (Bexley) was there both times.
Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the 11th minute when Laipple converted a direct kick from about 20 yards.
Less than 3 minutes later, it appeared as though the Bishops had a 2-0 lead as freshman forward Tyler Bryant (Chillicothe/Unioto) tapped a shot from the left side. The ball angled past DePauw keeper John Fenley and appeared to be headed inside the right post, but a DePauw defender chased down the ball and cleared it to preserve the 1-0 margin.
Laipple had another restart in the closing minutes of the first half, but his drive from about 25 yards out hooked just outside the left post.
Early in the second half, Dague kept the Bishops on top by knocking down and covering a shot off the foot of DePauw's Jeremy Rielley.
Wall gave the Bishops a 2-0 lead in the 59th minute when he advanced the ball up the left side, cut inside and ripped a shot from the top of the box that got past DePauw keeper Ted Jacobi.
Wall set up Ohio Wesleyan's final goal, sending the ball inside to sophomore midfielder Jordan Halloran (Springfield/Catholic Central), whose shot from the top of the box found the back of the Tiger goal
