Ohio Wesleyan 2, John Carroll 1
Sept. 22, 2007
Sophomore midfielder Will Murawski (Alpharetta, Ga./Westerville North) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal and the Bishop defense preserved the lead through the second half as Ohio Wesleyan took a non-conference win over John Carroll on Saturday at Roy Rike Field.
The Blue Streaks jumped to a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Steve Smola jumped on a turnover inside the Ohio Wesleyan box and tapped the ball past Bishop keeper Jamison Dague (Bexley).
Ohio Wesleyan responded with the tying goal just over 4 minutes later. After a John Carroll card, the Bishops were awarded a restart from about 35 yards out. Sophomore midfielder Jordan Halloran (Springfield/Catholic Central) tapped the ball to freshman back Eric Laipple (Westerville/South), whose blast caught the underside of the crossbar and bounced down and into the Blue Streak goal.
The Bishops took the lead in the final minute of the first half. Freshman forward Tyler Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) advanced the ball into the box and ripped a shot that Blue Streak keeper Matt DeMarchi stopped but could not control. The ball caromed to the right and appeared to glance off a John Carroll defender before Murawski sent the loose ball into the back of the net.
Scoring chances were at a premium during the second half. John Carroll had the best opportunity, that coming when Scott McKinney fielded a pass into the box and sent a blast toward the goal, but his shot was right at Dague, who tipped it over the crossbar for his only save of the night. John Carroll did earn another corner in the closing minutes of regulation, but was not able to get off a shot on goal.
John Carroll outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 10-8. Dague made 1 save for Ohio Wesleyan. DeMarchi finished with 2 saves for John Carroll.
