Sophomore David Gatz (Delaware/Hayes) posted Ohio Wesleyan's best individual finish to lead the Bishops on the first day of the North Coast Athletic Conference championship meet on Thursday in Canton.

After the first day of competition, Denison was leading the meet with 557 points to 452 for Kenyon. Wabash was third with 304 points, followed by Wooster (241), Wittenberg (207), Allegheny (151), Hiram (122), Ohio Wesleyan (121) and Oberlin (114).

Gatz finished 19th in the 200 IM.

Other standouts for the Bishops included sophomore Kevin Fahey (Delaware/Hayes), who placed 20th in the 500 freestyle; and sophomore Jaimito Fuentes (Massillon/Glen Oak), who finished 20th in the 200 IM.

The Bishop 200 freestyle relay team of senior Robert Naples (Hamden, Conn./Notre Dame), sophomore Nathaniel Cook (Delaware/Hayes), sophomore Andrew Sisson (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and junior Todd Ufferman (Delaware/Hayes) finished eighth, as did the 400 medley relay team of Fahey, Gatz, Fuentes and sophomore Usman Javaid (Lahore, Pakistan/Aitchison).

The NCAC championship meet continues on Friday in Canton.
