Ohio Wesleyan 8, Case Reserve 0

March 30, 2008

[ Rachel Seibel ]Sophomore lefthander Rachel Seibel (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) fired a 1-hitter and helped her own cause by driving in a run, and sophomore second baseman Emily Bradley (Columbus/Upper Arlington) tied school records with 4 runs scored and 4 stolen bases to help Ohio Wesleyan defeat Case Reserve in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at Hayes High School in Delaware.

In the opener, sophomore outfielder Sarah Cook (Sidney/Fairlawn) and sophomore outfielder Amanda Sanders (Lima/Bath) drove in runs that gave the Bishops a 2-0 lead, but the Spartans rallied to take the win.

Seibel shut down the Spartan offense during the nightcap, striking out 10 batters in 6.0 innings. The only hit she allowed came with one out in the fourth, when Spartan pitcher Teddi Jacobson sent a drive to right center which fell in front of a diving attempt by freshman outfielder Tara VanVranken (North Canton/Massillon Jackson), with Jacobson checking in at second with a double.

The Bishops took a 1-0 lead in the first when Bradley singled, stole second, moved to third on an infield out and scored on a passed ball.

Ohio Wesleyan made it 2-0 in the third. Bradley led off with a bloop between first and second that trickled out of Spartan second baseman Angel Rice's glove for an error. Bradley then stole second and scored on a single by VanVranken.

Bradley added to the Bishop lead in the fifth, singling with one out, then stealing second and third before scoring on a passed ball.

The Bishops ended the game with 5 runs in the sixth. Sophomore first baseman Catrice Mayweather (Lewis Center/Olentangy) led off with a single and sophomore third baseman Rita Cook (Sidney/Fairlawn) reached base when Jacobson threw wildly on her infield grounder. Sarah Cook followed with a grounder to Rice, who tried to tag Rita Cook between first and second but missed, then threw wide of first base, with Mayweather scoring, Rita Cook going to third and Sarah Cook taking second on the play. Seibel plated Rita Cook with an infield out, and one out later, Bradley tripled home Sarah Cook for a 6-0 Bishop lead. Sanders singled in Bradley to make it 7-0, then stole second and third before VanVranken ripped a line drive that went off the end of the glove of a leaping Rice for a single, scoring Sanders to end the game.

Bradley's 4 runs scored tied the school record accomplished 3 times before, twice by Linsey Longstreth and once by Amy Mazur. Her 4 stolen bases tied the mark set by Longstreth against St. Norbert on March 14, 2006.

In the opener, the Bishops took a 1-0 lead in the second when senior catcher Miranda Simmons (Norwalk) led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on Sarah Cook's single.

Ohio Wesleyan added a run in the third as Bradley led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Sanders' infield out.

Case closed to within 2-1 in the fourth as Lauren Seeds led off with a double and scored on a single by Chelsea Poelking.

The Spartans took the lead in the sixth when Seeds led off with a walk, moved to second on an infield out and took third on Poelking's single. Anneliese Fetterman walked to load the bases before Jacobson sliced a single down the leftfield line to tie the game at 2-2. Rice then drew a walk to force in the go-ahead run and Beth Andrasik followed with a walk to force in another run to make it 4-2.

Mayweather pitched the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan, striking out 4 and walking 5.
