![]() Allegheny 5, Ohio Wesleyan 2 April 12, 2008 Ohio Wesleyan had entered the day atop the NCAC standings at 5-1, with Allegheny tied for second place a game back at 4-2. The Gators move to 6-2 with the sweep, with Ohio Wesleyan falling to third place at 5-3. Wittenberg, which was tied for second place going into Saturday, had its twinbill at Hiram postponed and remains at 4-2. The Gators took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener as Abby Bodenlos led off with a single, stole second and scored on a double by Rachel Ryan. Allegheny added 3 runs in the third, with Ryan collecting another RBI double during the frame and Maggie Bodenlos plating Ryan with an RBI single. Ohio Wesleyan made it 4-1 on doubles by sophomore third baseman Rita Cook (Sidney/Fairlawn) and sophomore lefthander Rachel Seibel (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) in the fourth, and closed to within 4-2 in the sixth on a double by VanVranken and a single by senior catcher Miranda Simmons (Norwalk). Allegheny tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on Allison Korotkin's RBI single. Seibel pitched the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan, allowing 9 hits and striking out 3 while walking none. Amanda Downey picked up the win for the Gators. In the nightcap, the Bishops jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when sophomore outfielder Krystle Skaziak (Dublin/Scioto) led off with a triple and scored on VanVranken's single. Allegheny erupted for 4 runs in the bottom of the first, collecting a 2-run single by Maggie Bodenlos and a 2-run double by Korotkin. Ohio Wesleyan answered with 2 runs in the top of the second, with Seibel singling home a run and scoring on Skaziak's second triple of the game, but Allegheny added 4 more runs in the bottom of the inning, with Marci Potuzko's 3-run homer the big hit. Mayweather launched a solo homer over the fence in left center in the top of the third to make it an 8-4 game, but the Gators answered with a 2-run single by Ryan in the bottom of the inning and ended the game with RBI doubles by Potuzko and Ryan in the bottom of the fifth. Skaziak and Seibel had 2 hits apiece for the Bishops. Mayweather pitched the complete game, striking out 2 and walking 4. Korotkin was the winning pitcher for Allegheny. |
