![]() Ohio Wesleyan 5, Wooster 1 April 26, 2008 The sweep gives Ohio Wesleyan a 10-4 record in the NCAC, the third-best conference record posted by the Bishops in their 9 seasons of NCAC competition. With the sweep, the Bishops finished 1 game behind Allegheny in the conference championship race and will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NCAC tournament. Ohio Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the opener when sophomore shortstop Amanda Sanders (Lima/Bath) singled and senior catcher Miranda Simmons (Norwalk) blasted a home run to left center. Mayweather crushed a 3-run shot in the fifth, scoring freshman outfielder Tara VanVranken (North Canton/Massillon Jackson), who had singled, and Simmons, who had walked. Wooster averted the shutout when Katelynn Caywood hit a solo homer in the sixth. Sophomore lefthander Rachel Seibel (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) pitched the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan, striking out 5 and walking 1. Katie Pifer was the starting and losing pitcher for Wooster. In the nightcap, the Bishops loaded the bases in the top of the first on walks to Sanders, VanVranken and Simmons. One out later, sophomore third baseman Rita Cook (Sidney/Fairlawn) reached on an error by Fighting Scot shortstop Caitlin Gaffney, with Sanders and VanVranken scoring on the play. Sanders and VanVranken drove in runs in the second to increase the Bishop lead to 4-0, and sophomore outfielder Krystle Skaziak (Dublin/Scioto) lined a 2-run single to highlight Ohio Wesleyan's 4-run third inning. Mayweather held the Scots to 4 hits and allowed only one Wooster runner to reach third base. Andrea Kelley was the starting and losing pitcher for Wooster. |
