Senior
outside hitter Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary), junior middle hitter Katie
Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby), senior outside hitter Stefanie McCoy (Powell/Olentangy)
and junior setter Shea Pence (Danville, Ind./Danville Community) led a
balanced Ohio Wesleyan offense, but Grove City defeated the Bishops in
the championship match of the Bishop Invitational on Saturday at Branch
Rickey Arena.
Ohio Wesleyan had completed pool play with a narrow 5-game loss to Transylvania,
but the Bishops won a tie-breaker to win their pool and move into the
championship match for the third straight season.

Grove City defeated the Bishops, 30-28, 25-30, 30-28, 30-21 in the championship
match. Graf had 14 kills, Hamilton provided 12 and Pence and McCoy had
10 kills apiece. Graf also led the Bishops defensively, collecting 21
digs, while senior middle hitter Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial)
recorded a team-high 3 blocks and Pence led the Bishops with 38 assists.
Against Transylvania, Ohio Wesleyan rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win
the fourth game and force a deciding fifth game, but the Pioneers escaped
with a 15-13 decision and the match, completing a 30-26, 22-30, 30-23,
21-30, 15-13 victory.
Graf pounded out a season-high 25 kills to lead Ohio Wesleyan, while McCoy
finished with 14 kills and Lester added 12 more. Graf and Hamilton shared
the team lead with 2 blocks apiece, Pence contributed a season-high 56
assists, and senior libero Jaime Scharf (Marion/River Valley) led the
Bishops with 34 digs.
Scharf was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. She was joined
on the all-tournament team by McCoy.
