Jan. 5, 2008

[ Kayla Gordon ]Freshman post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) scored 8 points during the first half as Ohio Wesleyan erased a 9-point deficit, and the Bishops pulled away during the second half to post a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wooster on Saturday in Wooster.

Fueled by a pair of game-opening lay-ins by Kym Wenz and a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer from Meredith Wilson, the Fighting Scots raced to an 11-2 lead just over 5 minutes into the game.

Wooster still led, 19-11, on Wenz's jumper with 11:32 left in the half when the Bishops started their comeback.

Gordon started the Bishop rally with a 3-pointer, and after a Wooster basket, freshman wing Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) sank a free throw and sophomore guard Lauren Gentene (Mason) hit a 3-pointer to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 21-18. Cordell and senior post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) scored to counter a basket and a free throw by Wooster's Hannah Kerkian-Winton before senior post Malley Adamsky (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) buried a pair of free throws to tie the contest at 24-24 with 4:40 left in the half.

Wooster's Becca Hartsock followed with a basket to give the Fighting Scots a 26-24 lead, but senior wing Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) drained 3 free throws that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and Cordell beat the first-half buzzer with a lay-in that gave the Bishops a 29-26 lead at the break.

Gordon launched a 3-pointer to open the second-half scoring, kicking off a 16-6 Ohio Wesleyan run that included 2 more Gordon baskets and hoops by senior wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) and Cordell. Gordon's last basket finished off the Bishop spurt, which gave Ohio Wesleyan a 45-32 lead with 12:27 left in regulation time.

Meredith Wilson hit a jumper to bring Wooster within 45-34 with 12:09 remaining, but the Fighting Scots then went scoreless for more than 6 minutes, missing 10 straight field goal attempts and 6 straight free throw attempts, and would go more than 11 minutes until their next basket as the Bishops expanded the lead to 20 points during the closing minutes.

Gordon led the Bishops with 15 points, while Cordell finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, recording season bests in both categories, and led Ohio Wesleyan with 4 assists.

Wenz led Wooster with 16 points, Wilson added 11 points, and Kaitlin Krister scored 10 points and led the Fighting Scots with 7 rebounds.
