Jan. 30, 2008

[ Steffi Graf ]Senior wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) scored 6 points and freshman post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) had 5 as Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with a 20-2 run and never looked back on the way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Gordon opened the evening's scoring with a 3-pointer and followed with a lay-in to give the Bishops a 5-0 lead.

Oberlin got on the scoreboard when Syrea Thomas hit a pair of free throws exactly 3 minutes into the game, but the Bishops reeled off the next 15 points.

Graf started the Bishop run with a 3-point play, then buried a 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession. Freshman wing Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) and junior post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless) followed with baskets before sophomore guard Lauren Gentene (Mason) canned a jumper and freshman guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) knocked down a 3-pointer for a 20-2 Ohio Wesleyan lead with 12:32 left in the first half.

The Ohio Wesleyan defense turned in an outstanding effort, forcing 11 turnovers during the first 7-plus minutes of action while the Bishops built the 20-2 lead.

Alyssa Clark's lay-in with 12:10 left in the half was the first basket of the game for the Yeowomen, but Ohio Wesleyan scored the next 7 points on baskets by Lawson and Quigney, along with a lay-in and a free throw from senior post Malley Adamsky (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township), and the lead would remain at least 20 points throughout the remainder of the contest.

Quigney led the Bishops with 22 points. Sophomore wing Rachel Seibel (Johnstown) finished with a season-high 12 points, Graf added 11 points and Lawson contributed 10 points. Adamsky led the Bishops with a career-high 11 rebounds.

Alicia Smith led the Yeowomen with 10 points, and Roneisha Kinner had a team-high 6 rebounds.
